Description: 

CIMBENIN has developed through company CALCIM S.A., a unit of extraction and crushing of limestone from the development of deposits of limestone in the Mono. The site chosen for this competition is located in FONGBA in the Department of Mono, town Lokossa 5 km from the city from the north side.

Lokossa is a town in the south-west of Benin, capital of the town of the same name and prefecture of the department of Mono. Its name means "under the iroko. The population was 77 065 in the 2002 census. (FONGBA, AID, April 2011 EIA report).

The climate is subequatorial type in four seasons (two rainy seasons and two dry seasons appended) more or less scored in the year. There are two kinds of soils namely: ferralitic soils and hydromorphic soils. (FONGBA, AID, April 2011 EIA report).

The town of Lokossa has an important River-Lake complex dominated by the Mono River Valley is a vast depression coupled with that of TChi to detach the sector of Lokossa from the rest of the Mono department. (FONGBA, AID, April 2011 EIA report). The town has three (03) rivers and four sources (04); forty-five (45) tanks and landscaped wells, pumps and boreholes. The economy of the town is characterized by a variety of activities: plant and animal production, handicraft, trade, transport, industry, services and in a lesser extent fish production, hunting, logging, maintenance/repair, and tourism. (FONGBA, AID, April 2011 EIA report).

Habitat, flora & fauna description: 

The climate of the municipality of Lokossa is conducive to polyculture and exuberant vegetation. The vegetation today is strongly affected by population pressure. It is dominated by herbaceous species. The dense forest of past centuries, has given to anthropogenic vegetation of Palm trees, filled shrubs including iroko (Chlorophora excelsa), the Baobab (Adansonia digitata), the cheese maker (Ceiba pentadra) and Samba (Triplochyton scleroxylon). Alignment and species planting Acacia (Acacia auriculiformis), eucalyptus and roasts eucalyptus and teak (Tectona grandis), of frake (Terminalia superba), palm oil (Elaeis guineensis) and Neem (Azadirachta indica). Produce grown in all of the town are maize, cowpea, cassava, peanuts, banana, sugar cane, tomato, sweet potato, rice, pepper, okra, leafy vegetables that provide food to the population of the town. (Monograph Lokossa, Africa Council, March 2006).

The gradual disappearance of the forest formations corollary is the scarcity of wildlife. We meet however a few species like the grasscutter, the rabbit to rabbit ears, the monitor lizard, the francolin, snakes, frogs and rare water birds. The guib arnauche, the guib of water, the duikers and monkeys are endangered. (Monograph Lokossa, Africa Council, March 2006).

Farming concerns species such as poultry… The ruminants (sheep, goats), cattle and pigs. (Monograph Lokossa, Africa Council, March 2006).
