Description:

“Monte Giglio” is a marl quarry located in the middle of three municipalities: Calusco, Carvico and Villa D’Adda. There are houses and other activities on three sides of the perimeter while on the nord side there is the Adda river park (called Parco Adda Nord).

The excavation project provides an evolution of the minable area from top to bottom creating a pit, with descending benches of limited thickness, mined by drilling and blasting. A syncline structure of great scientific interest is observable on north bench. The rain water collected in the main square is pumped and flowed in sedimentation tanks.

The marl is crushed directly in the quarry and then reaches the near cement plant storage by belt conveyor.

The rehabilitation plan is performed as soon as the benches are exhausted and together with the excavation of the other benches not yet completed.

Operations carried out for rehabilitation program are:

  • smooth blasting to create final slopes such as natural (slope 30°-35°);
  • covering the final slope with topsoil taken from the quarry (normally 25-30 cm);
  • seeding mix grass and planting shrubs or trees till 2 years from the end of works.
