Voronezh State Academy of Forestry and Technologies
16 Dec 2011
The 15th of December the Quarry Life Award was presented in Voronezh State Academy of Forestry and Technologies.
Voronezh State Academy of Forestry and Technologies is one of the 11 state universities and academies of Voronezh. Founded in 1930 the Academy comprises 7 modern study buildings, 9 faculties, 34 departments and 100 equipped laboratories. The Academy is involved in many ecological activities on the regional, country and international level.
As you know the year 2011 is declared the International Year of Forests by the United Nations. The idea is to raise awareness and strengthen the sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests for the benefit of current and future generations.
Forest restoration in Voronezh region heavily damaged by fires during the summer of 2010 is the matter of prime concern. According to the Regional Forest Plan the scientific-experimental forest farm of the Academy is to lay more than 900 ha of forest plantation and facilitate forest natural regeneration on the area of 270 ha till 2020.
Students of the Academy are involved in all stages of forest restoration from cutting burnt wood, rooting out, scarifying, mulching till planting nursery plants.
The Quarry Life Award program presented yesterday to the students and faculty is in line with research activities of the Academy. Such topics as Ecological value of pine forest plantation (fire risk, soil development and economic value); Soil quality as a factor of time, Ecological value of mining sites in an intensively used agricultural black soil region may be very interesting for nature conservation and biodiversity promotion in Voronezh region.
I would like to say thank you to the faculty of the academy and especially to Dr.Mikhail Drapalyuk, vice-rector for science and innovation for a very warm welcome.
