Storybook In Search of a New Home: Empathy and Imagination in Education
We created an original eco-storybook featuring animal characters from the KSM Ruda area: Viki the lapwing, Monika the tree frog, Maks the young roe deer, and Zuza the mason bee. The story addresses themes such as habitat loss, species threats, agricultural chemicalization, climate change, anthropogenic pressure, and the importance of interspecies relationships. The child-friendly narrative fosters empathy, sensitivity, and responsibility for the natural world.
The storybook is divided into ten chapters, each introducing new characters, challenges, and emotions, guiding readers through an adventurous journey in search of a new home. Chapter titles include: Spring’s Arrival, An Unusual Encounter, A New Companion, Journey to a New Place, A Dangerous Crossing, Mysterious Fog, Troublesome Strangers, Discovery of a New Place, New Life in a Picturesque Meadow, and Happy Family Life. Each chapter carries its own rhythm and message, culminating in a moral that summarizes the story’s values.
The book also includes a plot summary and character profiles, making it an excellent educational tool. It can be used not only for reading but also as a starting point for discussions, workshops, and educational activities. The storybook was prepared in both Polish and English, allowing us to reach a broader audience and support language learning in a nature-based context.
Its universal message proved effective during numerous preschool sessions and served as a prize in the field game, providing a lasting educational souvenir. The 56-page book blends children’s literature, environmental education, and emotional storytelling into a cohesive and engaging whole.
The storybook is a key achievement of the project, remaining a permanent educational resource beyond its conclusion. It becomes a bridge between generations—parents and caregivers reading it with children also learn new content, strengthening relationships and shared ecological awareness. In this way, we transcend boundaries: from the real-world quarry to the literary realm, bringing education into the space of emotion and imagination.
At the same time, the storybook inspires adults to talk to children about ecology and responsibility, giving education an intergenerational and inclusive dimension.
What is our story about? Here’s a short summary: Viki the lapwing returns from a long journey from warmer lands, seeking a safe place to nest. She meets Maks, a young roe deer, who offers to help and guides her to a new location. Along the way, they are joined by Monika the tree frog, who lost her pond, and Zuza the mason bee, searching for a flower-filled meadow. Will this extraordinary journey end happily for our brave heroes? What adventures await them? One thing is certain—friendship, courage, and cooperation will help them overcome any danger. Will they begin a new life in harmony with nature? You’ll find the answers in the pages of this remarkable storybook.
