20 Community Members and a Dream to Restore and protect a Quarry
Wazo Hill: From Rock to Roots – The Story of Seeds Becoming a Forest
Once a lifeless expanse of rock and dust, the Wazo Hill Quarry is now echoing with the footsteps of hope - carried by 20 passionate community members, youth volunteers, and environmental stewards who believe in a future where nature reclaims what was lost.
In 2025, a new chapter unfolds. Under the ongoing Quarry Life Award project titled “Assessment of Seed Production Requirements at Wazo Hill Quarry and Seed Bank,” the once barren land has not only flourished with native trees, but the forest has now begun to produce its seeds.
This isn’t just a technical milestone - it’s a living testament to a community’s dream. A dream where locals are not just beneficiaries but active caretakers of the land. Through a blend of traditional knowledge, local participation, and support from Twiga Cement (Tanzania Portland Cement PLC), this restored quarry now stands as a model for self-sustaining forest ecosystems.
The efforts have moved beyond planting trees - now the focus is on seed-to-forest cycles, ensuring that restoration is long-lasting, resilient, and community-owned. The project has also established a community-led portable seed bank (Twiga EcoBox), training locals in seed collection, classification, and nursery care - empowering them with both skills and a sense of ownership.
“When you see seeds falling from trees we planted, it’s not just growth - it’s nature saying ‘thank you’,” says one of the young volunteers from the Wazo Hill community.
This is a success story made possible by science, community, and industry working hand-in-hand. And it proves that quarry restoration is not the end of extraction, but the beginning of regeneration.
Let Wazo Hill be a symbol - not of what was taken, but of what can be restored, together.
