Youth View at Quarry Nature announced best in Russia

The ceremony was opened by the speech of General Manager of HeidelbergCement in Russia Mihail Polendakov. He highlighted the importance of the contest in Russia and noticed that fresh ideas and new solutions enhance the dynamic development of the industrial sector.

“It is gratifying that the most active participants of the contest are students. Fresh ideas, new solutions - all this contributes to the dynamic development of our industrial sector, ” said Mr. Polendakov.

Kirill V. Sorokin, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Tula region, heartily congratulated the organizers and participants and wished them success and good luck in all their endeavors.

The contestants had the opportunity to present their projects in interesting photo-stories about their team work, visits to the quarry and common meetings. The visitors listened attentively to every representative of four competing teams. After that, the most exciting part of the ceremony - the announcement of the winners - started.

It turned out that there was no losing team in the Russian contest this year. Representatives of the Tula State Pedagogical University named after L. Tolstoy got the support of their families, friends and students and won the 3rd place in the public vote contest for their project "Biodiversity and Education". They’ve got special prizes and certificates.

Project “The Triumph of Nature” of the representatives of Tula State University Vitaly Soldatov, Vladislav Nikulin and Andrey Borzenkov under guidance of Prof. A. F. Simankin won 3rd place and the cheque for 1.500 euro. During their work, authors studied the effect of emissions from the operations on the regenerative processes in the Novogurovsky quarry and offered a way to speed up the recovery process by creating favorable conditions in the primary stages of recovery.

“This is the first time I took part in such contest. Participation in the contest was influenced by my sincere desire to do something for the good of the Tula region, for the benefit of nature,” said one of the project researchers Vitaly Soldatov.

Second place took the project “Creation of Paleontological Park on the Territory of “Shakh-Tau” Quarry” of the representatives of Bashkir State University and Ufa State Oil University Svetlana Garipova, Artur Ishmaev and their big team. Their joint efforts resulted in integrated project of the paleontological park, which includes modern architectural solutions and scientific and educational infrastructure. The contestants received 3.000 euro and certificates.

Representatives of Saint-Petersburg State University with their team leader Tatiana Trofimova and project “Youth View at Quarry Nature” appeared to win the first place and the cheque for 5.000 euro. Authors studied biodiversity in Pechurki quarry and made recommendations for the future reclamation works. In addition to this, researchers have also developed a board game “Eco-Quarry” for pupils and students.

All participating projects have now the possibility to win International Award Ceremony that will take place on December 9th in Prague. The Grand Prize winner will receive a cheque for 30.000 EUR.
