Assessing temporal and spatial biodiversity values of a quarrying enterprise using Gaskell Quarry as an exemplar
This project aims to build the capacity of Gaskell Quarry to quantify its biodiversity footprint and identify strategies for improving biodiversity outcomes in the region, providing an exemplar for biodiversity assessment and reporting for the minerals and mining sector. To achieve this, the team will use the digital platform NatureIQ™, developed by Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), to focus on three key activities:
- undertake a temporal and spatial biodiversity assessment of Gaskell Quarry from 1987 until today. The Assessment will focus on biodiversity indicators linked to the Global Biodiversity Framework and the International Finance Corporation Performance Standard 6 (IFC PS6), enabling Hanson to report on its biodiversity position in a globally consistent way;
- Analyse management strategies that will improve the biodiversity position for Gaskell Quarry into the future and enable the business to prioritise locations and actions that will provide greatest biodiversity improvements from restoration as well as provide insights into areas where future mining activities will have least adverse effects on biodiversity; and
- Prepare a dashboard synthesising the biodiversity position of the Gaskell Quarry, to simply and visually demonstrate the quarry’s biodiversity position
