Biodiversity in Action: Protecting the Amphibians and Reptiles of the Ait Baha Quarries
The “Biodiversity in Action: Protecting Amphibians and Reptiles of the Aït Baha Quarries” project addresses the challenge of reconciling mining activities with biodiversity conservation in one of Moroccan biodiversity hotspot (Souss Valley). The project aims to mitigate habitat degradation caused by resource extraction through a comprehensive ecological inventory, documenting amphibian and reptile species while identifying their specific ecological requirements.
To support species survival and reproduction, the project will establish artificial ponds and safe refuges tailored to their habitats. Ecological corridors will also be developed to reconnect fragmented habitats, promoting movement and genetic exchange between populations. Beyond conservation efforts, the project incorporates educational initiatives to engage local communities and quarry employees. Interactive workshops and educational materials will foster environmental awareness and encourage sustainable practices.
By integrating scientific research, ecological restoration, and community outreach, this project seeks to restore biodiversity while supporting local economic activities, ensuring a balanced coexistence between human development and biodiversity.
