From Quarries to Artificial Ecosystems: Sustainable Solutions for Biodiversity

The quarry located in Çatalca district of Istanbul is a significant area for local wildlife. By converting unused sections of the quarry into temporary wetlands, microhabitats can be created for wetland-dependent species. These temporary wetlands will serve as rest and feeding stops for migratory water birds. The primary aim of the project is to support ecological balance through habitat restoration and to mitigate the negative impacts of quarries on biodiversity. The methodology includes identifying target species, designing microhabitats suitable for their needs, monitoring water levels and quality, improving vegetation, and tracking mammal populations with camera traps if resources allow. Additionally, the project will include an awareness campaign targeting children and the local community, promoting the concept of biodiversity and sustainability within quarries. Educational programs, site tours, and interactive materials will be developed to highlight the ecological value of artificial ecosystems in quarries.
