Implementing grazing again to preserve a dry grassland on limestone slabs

As part of an application for authorization to extend the Arancou quarry, an ecological assessment revealed the presence of dry grasslands on limestone slabs within the perimeter. These grasslands are habitats of Community interest, recognized at European level for their biodiversity value.

However, this area has been left to evolve freely for several years, leading to the gradual closure of the environment through the development of shrubs.

The project of the Cellule d'Assistance Technique Landes et Pelouses Sèches 64 (CATLPS64), run by the Conservatoire d'espaces naturels de Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is to support the owner and manager of the site who wants to restore these dry grasslands through grazing. Ecological monitoring will be carried out to assess whether the pastoral management objectives have been achieved or whether adjustments are necessary.

Finally, a site visit will be organized for the public and elected representatives.

The many exchanges that will result from this project will help to raise awareness among local stakeholders of the importance of preserving dry grasslands.
