Inside Our Native Seed Vault: Preserving Life for the Future
Where Every Seed is a Promise of Tomorrow
Wazo Hill | Quarry Life Award - 6th Edition
As part of our restoration journey at Wazo Hill Quarry, we’ve taken a critical step toward long-term ecological resilience:
the creation of a native seed vault - a secure, living archive of indigenous plant diversity.
Under the project “Assessment of Seed Production Requirements at Wazo Hill Quarry and Seed Bank,” our seed vault goes beyond storage. It’s a strategy to ensure that the native forest ecosystem can regenerate itself, supported by a scientifically-managed seed supply rooted in local species knowledge.
Why This Seed Vault Matters:
- Preserves native genetic diversity from Wazo Hill’s unique ecological zone
- Enables future restoration efforts without reliance on external seed sources
- Supports seed viability testing, classification, and controlled distribution
- Acts as a model for portable, scalable seed banking in post-industrial landscapes
This facility - named Twiga EcoBox - is not just for research, but for community use, local school learning, and biodiversity resilience.
“Seeds are time capsules of ecosystems. Preserving them is how we secure the future - species by species, forest by forest.”
With each seed collected and stored, we’re safeguarding not just plants, but the relationships they hold - with people, soil, water, and climate.
We’re proud to be building a solution that supports both scientific restoration and community empowerment - ensuring that Wazo Hill Quarry becomes not just green again, but truly alive by incorporating community as key stakeholders in the restored forest.
