Local Seed Production vs. Purchased Seed - Evidence That Drives Change

At Wazo Hill Quarry, we compared the cost and quality of locally produced native seeds with seeds purchased from national and commercial suppliers.

The findings were clear:

  1. Cost savings: Local seed collection is 64-74% cheaper than buying from seed agencies or markets.

  2. Quality: Germination rates of freshly collected seeds were 70-91%, compared to 40 - 80% for purchased lots.

  3. Traceability: Local collection follows ISTA standards, ensuring genetic diversity and species suitability.

Recommendations:

  • Invest in local seed production systems at quarry sites - it’s more economical and ecologically sound.

  • Integrate seed banking (Twiga Eco-Box) into restoration plans for year-round seed availability.

  • Use this model to reduce restoration costs, improve planting success, and build local biodiversity capacity.

This is not just ecological restoration - it’s smart, scalable restoration economics.
