Spanish students and their teachers chose a creative approach to biodiversity in quarries. After thorough research, they prepared wooden boxes as display cabinets.

These boxes explain the geomorphological and climatic characteristics of quarries and feature many artefacts showing the different species which can be found in quarries.

The students exhibited the boxes in various educational centres. Surveys conducted by the team showed a significant positive impact of the exhibition on the public’s understanding and opinion about quarrying and biodiversity at mining sites. Thus, the project not only educated the participating children but also increased other children’s and the public’s awareness of biodiversity in quarries.

The Spanish project team therefore was awarded the QLA trophy and prize in the category “Biodiversity & Education” in the Community Stream.
