From Quarry to Seed Vault: The Twiga Eco Box is Here!

Wazo Hill Quarry | A Restoration Milestone

After more than 15 years of dedicated ecological restoration, the vision of Tanzania Portland Cement PLC and Heidelberg Materials is bearing fruit, literally. The trees planted years ago at Wazo Hill Quarry are now producing viable seeds, a clear sign of a resilient and maturing ecosystem.

And now, we proudly introduce the Twiga Eco Box, a portable seed bank designed to store and safeguard native seeds for quarry restoration and biodiversity conservation.

Current capacity: 5,000 seeds
Future potential: Scalable, replicable, and community-driven

The Twiga Eco Box is more than a storage unit; it's a symbol of restoration success and a tool for the future. Built with simplicity, mobility, and local seed bank guidelines in mind (including ISTA standards), this innovation ensures seasonal seed availability for reforestation and tree donation programs under the Quarry Restoration & Renaturation Project.

Why it matters:

  • Ensures long-term seed security for native species

  • Marks a new era of seed sovereignty at rehabilitated quarry sites

  • Reflects the global commitment of Heidelberg Materials to biodiversity and sustainability

  • Serves as a scalable model for other quarries in Africa and beyond

This is a moment of pride, not just for our project team, but for every person and partner who has walked this journey of restoration with TPCPLC.

Stay tuned! The Twiga Eco Box will soon be unveiled, and we’ll be sharing its design, features, and impact in the weeks ahead.

Together, we are storing seeds and securing ecosystems.
