Mapping Nature’s Blueprint at Wazo Hill Quarry
Theme: Scientific Research for Sustainable Restoration
In the heart of Tanzania, the rugged landscape of Wazo Hill Quarry is telling a new story, one of regeneration, science, and sustainability. What was once seen purely as a site of extraction is now transforming into a living laboratory of biodiversity, thanks to our project under the Quarry Life Award 6th Edition.
Step by step, seed by seed, tree by tree, we are conducting a meticulous ecological assessment, focused on identifying and counting tree species that qualify for seed harvesting. This process forms the foundation for creating a comprehensive ecological baseline map, guiding our restoration with precision and purpose.
Armed with GPS tools, field notebooks, and a vision, our team is documenting the distribution of native trees, flowering cycles, and seed availability. We’re not just collecting data, we’re charting the future of Wazo Hill Quarry’s restoration.
The goal?
To ensure a seasonal, sustainable supply of high-quality seeds for replanting efforts through the Portable Community Seed Bank and Tree Donation Program under the Quarry Restoration & Renaturation Project.
Why it matters:
-
Enables targeted restoration using locally adapted species
-
Guarantees seed availability throughout seasons
-
Supports community engagement in tree growing and conservation
-
Empowers data-driven decision-making for ecological recovery
By building this ecological map, we are giving voice to the landscape, identifying where nature needs a hand, and where it’s ready to help us heal the scars of quarrying. This is more than science, it’s restoration with intention.
Thank you to Heidelberg Materials, Tanzania Portland Cement PLC, and all partners of the Quarry Life Award for supporting this transformative journey. Together, we are turning a once-barren quarry into a model of ecological innovation.
Let’s grow the future, one mapped seed at a time.
